An open letter to Donald Trump on Independence (immigration) day
legal immigration descendant orange bloke who used to be Alan Sugar in America Dear ignoramus POTUS
On the day you celebrate independence from the oppression of the Great British domination of the world, I would like to tell you a little story. As I have learnt from the many books I’ve read about you, you have no time for fake news, or anything that doesn’t quite see eye to eye with your opinion. But I care not a jot if you read this.
It’s a very humble story. Much like yours if your family did migrate from Scotland. I assume you know you’re an immigrant, right? Ok, probably a legal one but that’s beyond the point.
Welcome to Wales 1665
Great Britain have a new king. I think you’d have liked him, he was
a bit of a wanker extremely religious.
So religious he burned heretics at the stake. A
little bit like putting kids in cages.
Anyway, my story starts in Bala in North Wales with the Hughes family. Small tenant farmers, minding their own business, rearing their sheep. Owning the wrong sort of Bible. They were Quakers. And Quakers were heretics. Trouble makers, who would bring the world crashing down around 17th Century Bala.
The head of the family, Dafydd Hughes decided to send his sons Northward, and escape this oppression with his wife and daughter Matti, who was eight at the time. Matti was a wilful girl and had already been thrown out of her Sunday school, which was the only school she got, for asking questions a girl should not know the answers to.
In the dead of night, and leaving all their worldly possessions (and their sheep), they stole away to meet a ship from Ireland. This ship was already crammed with Irish Quakers and in fear of their lives, they sailed to a new hope. A new land. A new world. I can’t imagine how scary that must have been for an eight year old girl. Clinging to her mother and father in the hold of a ship. Away from her home for the first time. Separated from her brothers.
On the journey, her mother became ill and died. No records were kept at the time. But can you put yourself in her shoes, having to hold on to the dead body of the mother who had loved her, and to feel it becoming cold. It took three weeks to get to the brave new world. Three weeks without sanitation, without food or clean water. But this was better than death. There was no other viable option.
Coming to America
Matti and her father settled in Pennsylvania, a Welsh speaking settlement called New Gwynedd, now called Upper Gwynedd. They raised horses. I’m assuming. There are no records obviously. But whatever hardship they faced when they landed. They lived.
You see, my great aunt five times removed, immigrant to your great country, Matti Hughes from Bala, – scorned for her religion? She was great grandmother to your president Thomas Jefferson.
Sixteen of the signatories for the deceleration of independence were of Welsh descent. All descendants of immigrants. The only people native to American are the people who roamed the land before we murdered, pillaged and oppressed our way to greatness.
What’s your point ‘fake news’ woman?
I’ve written this so simply, you must be able to see the point (maybe I’m being rather too kind to you?). Matti wouldn’t have left her home if her life wasn’t in danger. Her father would still be on the hills rearing sheep. Her mother still alive and chastising her for not hiding her hair or not having darned her socks. She wouldn’t have had to make her way to America if she DIDN’T HAVE TO.
Immigrants are people. They were your family, and mine. Souls as precious and as priceless as any other soul on the face of the earth. They boost economies, and they made America great. You may now call them pioneers. Call them what you wish, but you seem to have clearly forgotten your roots, your humanity, and your senses.
I can’t put it any better than Lauren Jauregi :
Raise your hand if you are an immigrant, or the sons and daughters of immigrant parents, or the grandchildren of immigrants, or the great-grandchildren, or great-great-grandchildren? Wait…are everyone’s hands up—including yours, Mr. Trump—except for the Indigenous people of the Americas?! Because they should be.
In 1492 some Spanish conquistadors who were looking to expand their empire sailed over here and enslaved and murdered the Indigenous people who inhabited and took care of their beautiful Americas, both North and South. In 1620, European Christian separatists escaping religious persecution sailed here and started up their colonies by doing the same.
Those stripes are supposed to symbolize the brutal blood of a fight for liberation from oppression when really it was all seemingly for a few men’s legacy of conquer and power. There is no patriotism for this flag without a belief in those Constitutional Rights that were adopted from the Iroquois constitution.
Built on immigration
This country was built and continues to survive off the backs of immigrants and refugees. The term refugee in itself is such a significant word. These people are not terrorists: Many are escaping wars that we created in their lands. To tell another human being that the disastrous tortures of war are not important and to then go even a step further and insult their plight for freedom by labelling them “terrorists” is jus disrespectful to humanity. The only terrorism that both history and I have experienced has been at the hands of powerful White men who are willing to systematically kill and conquer without an ounce of empathy for anything but their pockets.
We have to realize how important this time is. My young people who understand and did not choose this for their future, the older generation who blindly chose to take this comfortable future we all envisioned away: We have never known war, we have never known the pain of discomfort, we have been privileged and promised into our moral oblivion.
We need to come together and let this administration know that we are not going to stand for another Nazi Germany or Stalin Russia or Mao Zedong China. The list is endless in the course of history, and it all happens the exact same way. The phrase history repeats itself is not a cliché for free.
Happy free from oppression day <3
Have a good one,
